Discourse

He liked to describe,
expound,
present,
and clarify,
and his conversations
were like assembly lines.
Once he started, he had to get
all the way to the end.
If he wanted to tell you
why an obscure rule applied
in Major League Baseball,
you would have to begin in 1906
and end no sooner than the present day.
And you’re sorry you asked,
nodding with occasional “uh-huhs,”
staring blankly at the TV,
patiently enduring until the cessation.
